Upstate Daylily Meeting September 9/17/23
Meeting was opened by President Jill Burriss. We are so lucky to have 6 new members with a total attendance of 23 for our plant exchange and pot luck meal. Karen Manning gave the Blessing before we hit the food line of so many delicious, different dishes and were lucky to end up with a good variety of leftovers to take home if anyone wanted. Fran Crumley gave the treasurers report. We are fortunate to be nicely solvent. Check with Fran if you want the exact numbers. For safety, sake we are no longer publishing the exact figures. The daylily collection is a group of plants that we buy each year and auction to our members. It makes it possible for us to get some newer flowers. It might be a money maker, but not necessarily. The point is to benefit the members and to enrich our gardens at lower prices. We do appreciate the time and investment of the hybridizers which is no small investment. This year we will purchase a collection of 50 flowers for $12 each from our own David Hoechst to be auctioned off in 2024. We will also order a collection (possibly from Jaime Gossard who has beautiful flowers) to grow by our members and auction in 2026. This year’s collection will be auctioned in 2025 to give them enough time to grow and double. The plan is to host the 2026 Spring Regional meeting. It is a lot of fun and a lot of work. All members need to be prepared for a job of some kind. There will be a speaker or two and 4 gardens to visit those being: Neil Richardson, Brian Martin, Clay Williamson and the South Carolina Botanical Garden. There will be preparations of materials for attendees; a sales table; auction of hybridizers’ donations; and “baskets” for a silent auction. We do not have a complete committee for nominations of next year’s officers so if someone is willing to help with this please let Jill or Neil know. I know my position is up as per the rules I have done it for 4 years and no longer eligible. The vote will take place at the November 12thmeeting (note this is moved up a week to not conflict with Thanksgiving) at the library. Fran is in charge of refreshments. The officers will preside at the January meeting which is usually a dinner at a restaurant hosted by the club. Thank you to Brenda Coggins for purchasing a wreath to donate to our Fall regional meeting in Columbia at the end of September. If anyone is interested, here is a nearby opportunity to see what it is like. Always a worthwhile gathering. Apparently our SCBG daylily bed was in poor shape and our newest member who at the time wasn’t a member went in and cleaned it out. Thank you, Terry Honeycutt. He said the back of the garden is not very picturesque because so much land was plowed under to make room for the roadway expansion. The backdrop is the fire station across the road. He suggested we might want to consider some kind of blind/screen to enhance the view. The Clemson sale will be held Friday, October 13th from 1-5 and Sat. 14thfrom 9-1 with a gathering at Neil’s on the 12th at 5 p.m. to prep the plants. Erin Carroll and the Frechettes will work Friday and Jill and Pam Walters will Saturday. Welcome to our new member Terry Honeycutt Upstate daylily Meeting August 19,2023
Jill Burriss opened the meeting at Anderson Library and introduced Brian Martin to present several new members. Jill had the tables arranged with the tag names of the flowers to make it easy to locate them during the auction. There were a few collection flowers that didn’t survive or were too small to uproot and a good many donations from our club members that all contributed to a successful sale. There were only a few challenges to some of the bidding wars for flowers which always makes for a fun interaction. All in all, there were 56 daylilies for sale. Thanks to Jill for all the computer work and David Hoechst for being our auctioneer and Fran Crumley for keeping the records and collecting the money. We were going to start with snacks first while the flowers were being arranged, but everyone was excited to get on with the sale. If they had seen the wonderful spread that Pam Walters provided they might have headed over that way first. Thanks Pam, you outdid yourself with pulled pork, fruit salad, potato salad, chips, brownies and lemon bar cookies. Ginny F. handed out some freebie flowers to our new members. Good news, bad news, she ran out, but will bring more for the next meeting. Our September meeting will be at the Anderson library Sunday September 17th at 2 pm. It is the plant swap where you can come and bring a few garden plants to share or nothing and just enjoy the outing but you’ll probably have to take a few home! This is a dish to pass dinner as well. Please bring serving silverware. As we won’t have a kitchen We will probably eat first as some dishes will be hot. We will discuss the daylily sale at the SCBG at the Sept. meeting and likely meet at Neil Richardson’s as we did for the spring sale to prep plants on Thursday the 12th before the sale October 13th and 14th. We were blessed with several new members so if you have a booklet please bring it to add the new members. Upstate Daylily May 21, 2023
Jill Burriss, President, opened the meeting and introduced our honored speaker, Bill Hurt, our Region 15 President. He brought his partner, Marshall Morrow and 2 friends along whom we were happy to have attend our meeting. He gave us a most informative powerpoint presentation filled with information (and cute stories) about setting up his garden, fertilizing the plants and how he thins the overage. He started out, like most gardeners, in the dark about what the end result would be; on a small piece of property about 1/10 of an acre which he planted with some iris, not knowing anything or much about daylilies. As he got crowded out, and his love of flowers grew, it was time to find more space. 6 years ago he moved to the country with one acre that he developed into a wonderful garden of daylilies. He also was approved as a Summit Lakes Daylily Display Garden. He will have an open garden on June 24th and hope many will come but you can also call ahead and set up a time you will be in the area when he will be home. To start a bed, the first thing he said is to amend it with Black Cow, mushroom compost, Milorganite and soil conditioner. He fertilizes in early March. A suggestion is to use “I Must Garden” weekly to deter deer if that is a problem and Meric (?) once a year for bug preventative His most generous and unique offer happens in September when he divides the flowers as necessary and offers them to his garden friends. If you are on his Facebook friends list, he will notify in advance what flowers he has available and you can send a list of what you might like. Hopefully everyone will get a first or second choice. He would like it if you picked them up but he will mail if you pay postage. Info at the end. The treasurer’s report was given and we are solvent. Secretary’s report was emailed and posted on the members’ site. It was announced our garden liason to SCBG, Kathy Bridges, is retiring and there will be a reception for her on May 30 if anyone would like to attend. Erin Carroll will be our club contact. It was requested she find out about the broken sprinkler system and can it be repaired. Also, we will replace plants in the fall that are lost or update with newer varieties. Erin will make a garden map and have a list of current flowers. We will be working to get our garden display accreditation reinstated. Many thanks to Jill that along with her myriads of other responsibilities, she managed to put together a booklet including pictures.
February 20, 2023
The February 20th meeting was held at the Anderson Library with Neil Richardson V.P. opening at 2:15. 14 people were present. The treasurer’s report was given and accepted. We have 2 new members, Heather Martin and Julie Roddey who was able to join us for the meeting. Julie raises Boston Terriers and shows them. We had an officers meeting Feb 6th at Southern Brewery to clarify the year and get the year organized. Bill Hirt has agreed to be a speaker for us, hopefully in March. He is the Region 15 President. He has a column in the Hemalina and is a hybridizer. April’s meeting will be at Neil’s on April 6th at 9 am, but come when you can as we have to clean, divide, sort and pot/label the plants in prep for the Clemson sale on the 7th and 8th. Bring appropriate tools to help get the job done. We need between 150 -200 plants with pictures if possible. David H. has offered many flowers with help digging but club members are encouraged to contribute as well. They sell best with a small picture 3x5, 2x4? If you can’t print a color picture let someone know. Neil has buckets and Erin may have the banner. There is another price increase being considered (from $8.00 to $10.00 and $15). The collection for this year will be from Kirchhoff and Morss, his 2020 doubles Collection. It will be 40 flowers of 20 different flowers. Distribution at the SCBG? when the flowers arrive. Neil handed out a list of the flowers. Jane Reeves will request the room at the library for our appropriate date We are looking into getting 100 post cards printed to hand out at the Clemson sale and the gardens of our members who sell. Some information needs to be changed. It was suggested to get a real estate type box for some cards or brochure and/or a QR code for our display garden at SCBC. We lost the display garden status with the ADS/AHS but we are trying to get it reinstated now that the garden is redone. Special thanks to Karen Manning (did Bill peel?) for the mashed potato bar with 4 different toppings. And cake. Yum! There was much discussion about a flower exhibition this June. It will be unsanctioned tentatively on June 10th. Kelvin B. gave an overview of how the show works and display of daylilies Neil is in discussion with 2 churches as a place to hold the show. We need a show chairman and judges. We will possibly have ribbons for winners and gift certificates to spend at our plant auction in August. The flowers can be scapes or off scape, but the offs will not be judged. There will be a photo contest also to be further organized but with 3 categories: 1: landscape; 2: single flower; and 3: clump. In order to get our booklet finished, we want to add a photo section. Please send Jill Burriss a selfie (or couples pix). The sooner you do this the sooner the booklet can be finished. |
January 22 2023
We had our annual Winter Dinner on January 22 at Tuckers Restaurant in Anderson. We met to eat at 2:30 and was attended by 24 members. Jill B opened the meeting as our new President after a delicious steak or chicken dinner.
Treasurer Fran C. gave the treasurer's report. She reminded us our dues are due now for the year.
There were several discussions concerning the possibility of raising the dues, finding out if we need to file with the state for non- profit status. We already file with the national. Fran will research that.
Membership committee of Neil, Brian Martin, and Clay reported on their progress. They have been calling the Presidents of Region 15 to find out what they do. They suggested a non-sanctioned photo contest: paying for the AHS membership after I year in the club; moving the show to the biggest church in the area; possibly New Springs; getting some billboard exposure; improvement in name badges by having them printed on both sides; having a booklet as in the past and having pictures in the booklet; door prize with a financial amount; and looking to our members who go could go to other clubs and give talks.
The nominating committee for new officers presented a slate of Jill B. for President, Neil R. for Vice Pres. Fran C. for treasurer and Ginny F. as Secretary. It was voted approved.
The Clemson flower sale will be April 7th and 8th. No meeting in April.
The officers will meet Feb 6 at 4 pm at Magnetic South Brewery in Anderson.

October 16, 2022 Daylily Meeting
We held our ever-popular plant exchange and pot luck supper at the Anderson Library.
The meeting opened about 2:30 and we decided to eat first since there were a number of hot dishes and we had no kitchen.
After a wonderful array of desserts, the meeting commenced. A bunch of ideas were addressed that I will try to list but not necessarily in the order of their discussion. Everyone had a lot to offer which was good.
Bill Manning suggested reducing the snacks to just drinks and Karen promptly volunteered for Feb. If someone decides to bring cookies that is fine but we will no longer have an organized effort.
We are going to try to have a meeting almost every month as was suggested in years prior but due to Covid it was not possible to institute. Neil, Brian, Kelvin, and Erin thought they might be able to get a speaker so that would be great. Maybe we can join another club or have them come to us to hear a speaker.
The November and December meetings will be moved up to the 2nd Sunday in deference to the Holidays. There may or may not be a June meeting in the hopes of having a non- sanctioned flower show.
Jill volunteered to call around and get some mulch prices but ultimately it was decided to contact Discount Bark near the 28 by bypass for about 12 yards of mulch as they have a premium product, double ground and very nice. Three trucks: Brian, Neil and Bill M. will meet Thursday, Oct 20 to pick it up.
We did not vote on new officers.

David Hoechst brought examples of the flowers one can expect at Floyd’s Cove as he and his friend, Luther Beck went on a road trip to visit the Nursery. It is in Florida so not a leisurely afternoon drive, but a great 2 acre hybridizing area working on teeth, ruffles and watermarks as well as a good sales garden.

March 20th 2022
The Upstate Daylily Society Mtg. was held on March 20th of 2022 The meeting started at 2:15 at the Anderson County Library Attendants: Nancy Hart, Kelvin Bryant, Bill and Karen Manning, Bill Hemmingson, Neil and Taunia Richardson, Brian and Donna Martin, Brenda Coggins, Jill Burriss, Erin (President) and Elizabeth Carroll, Jane Reeves, Fran Crumley (Treasurer) and David Hoechst. Secretary, Ginny Frechette , was absent and Jill Burriss took notes in her stead. Snacks were provided by: Fran Crumley, Jane Reeves, Brian and Donna Martin Erin opened meeting and introduced the guest speaker, David Hoechst. Topic: Plantstep Flower Software David needed a way to manage and organize all of his daylilies and found on internet www.plantstep.com. The Plantstep software costs $50 and has a database you can download onto computer. It’s also a way to find other people who sell daylilies and to see what they have. Erin Carroll opened nominations for Vice President. Kelvin Bryant and Neil Richardson suggested Jill Burriss as Vice President. Bill Manning motioned for Jill Burriss to be elected, Karen Manning seconded. Fran Crumley gave the financial report. Neil Richardson made motion to accept the treasurer’s report . Bill Manning seconded. Thursday morning , April 7, 2022, we will prepare everything to be dug up and dig the other half of the garden. Thursday afternoon Erin will put piece in a pot of each to save and transplant. The hope is to add in new plants and do away with some. April 8th and 9th, 2022 will be the sale at the SCBG New Business: The National asked us to put together a door prize basket $100 value on club’s behalf. It will be due in early July. Fran Crumley and Taunia Richardson agreed to put the basket together. Erin said we were asked to do Fall or Spring regional for 2023 and 2024. Brenda said it entails Friday night, Saturday and Banquet on Sat night. Erin said it would require catering lunch, snacks, banquet, auction, speaker for banquet and door prizes. The Registration cost would cover everything. Brenda suggested Spring of 2024. Three volunteers are required. Brian volunteered. This will be tabled until the next meeting David suggested club members sign up for a quick auction and club takes half. People would sign up for one per meeting. One person brings 10 plants, the club would receive half of profit. This would be voluntary. The daylilies could be bare root or potted. Jill Burriss motioned and David seconded. Erin volunteered to be the first to auction at the next meeting. Fran mailed check on Friday for new collection and expects by April 11
Feb 2022 Meeting
Erin Carroll opened the meeting at 2:40 due to a brief executive meeting. She gave the treasurer report for Fran Crumley who was out of town. The report was approved. Also, the secretary notes from the January meeting were approved as written on the members’ site.
Mark Davis, the Vice President, resigned and per the by laws, a nominating committee was formed to present a replacement at the March meeting for a vote. The group will be made up of Kelvin Bryant, Neil Richardson, and Bill Frechette.
Kelvin Bryant showed us a presentation from ADS on hybridizing. He had a good list of flower terminology that we will send out.
Erin appointed Clay Williamson as committee chair for the flower collection and they were given authority make the choice and order from Guy Pierce at Floyd’s Cove of Florida. Fran Crumley will send them a check for the collection of 15 flowers.
Secretary Ginny Frechette will not be at the March meeting so Jill Burriss will take notes for her.
David Hoechst will speak at the March meeting. His topic will be composting and /or a web- based program for keeping track of our flowers.
Our April gathering will be at the SCBG on April 7 to dig clumps and prep for the Clemson sale on the 8thand 9th. You will be reminded of those dates at the beginning of that week. Friday is 2-6 and Sat is 9-1. We need to consider moving the garden within the grounds due to an infestation of nutsedge which is practically uncontrollable. We understand that Clemson may have a solution.
For our June meeting, we are invited to David’s garden and lunch. We will also go to the Atlanta flower show of David’s club. He has an interesting garden and you will be amazed how he does so much of the work mostly by hand and a little help.
An announcement made to consider flower donations to the National Convention for the bargain table. Our own Donna and Frank Bobby will chair that project. Plans on how to get the flowers there will be made later.
It was approved to keep recent previous members on the list for a least if they want to after resign in case they might be able to come back as their situations change.
Please be on the lookout for locations to hold our 2023 flower show. All suggestions welcome. The more exposure the better. We need someone to organize a request to contact Region 15 hybridizers for newer flowers for our SCBG garden.
Refreshments were provided by Jill Burriss, Christopher Blackston, and Kelvin Bryant. So good!
Next meeting will be March 20that the library. There will not be a July meeting.

Daylily Winter Dinner - Jan. 30, 2022
We were pleased to kick off the new year with a wonderful catered dinner at 2:50 and proceeded to our meeting at 3:39 with Mark Davis, V. Pres presiding. He gave a talk about Google, how it works and how he is trying to incorporate it into our club. By using it, the members can get the latest information because we can update our club information quickly. We just need to grab on and make use of it or we can print up some pages for people who want that format. He also asked some hard questions about the club and what people were wanting to see and hear going forward to make the club vibrant again. We need volunteers in several areas so don’t be shy, step up and take a turn so it won’t be a burden on the few. We are a social group and you can get any help you need.
Mark suggested that the bylaws were not as complete as they might be. So that will be looked at and rewritten as needed to be more definitive. We also will need the committee chairs to write up what they see as their duties to help the next person do the job successfully and in a timely fashion.
Covid did halt our progress, but with the appropriate input and help from all the members, we can get on track. It is sad to say we cannot have a flower show this year, but that is being worked on so we can get a date, reserve a location, and request judges for the next show.
Mark D. had Karen Manning come forward and receive a card with our thanks for her years of service as treasurer. She did a great job for which we are thankful. He also acknowledged with thanks the tireless work of all the previous officers and workers.
Fran Crumley gave us the treasurer’s report. We do not report the balance in the minutes. We are solvent and grateful for that. Acceptance of the report was moved, seconded, and passed.
Ginny Frechette gave the secretary’s minutes of the executive meeting Jan. 2022. Acceptance of the minutes, as amended, was moved, seconded, and passed.
The Flower Collection Committee of John Cousins, Bill Hemmingsen, and Bill Manning has been given full responsibility with a dollar amount to choose a collection and order it. There will not be a vote on it due to the lateness in the year. Motion made by David Hoescht, seconded by Erin Carroll, and passed.
Several suggestions were brought up:
Bill Manning suggested that as a daylily club we need to concentrate on daylily speakers and projects.
David Hoescht suggested we sell flowers at other venues like festivals, etc. where we get to keep all the money instead of splitting it with Clemson. Another club he is in also sold flowers and made more money because they got to keep it. Some of the farmers markets have rules which we would need to abide by. This is being explored.
David also mentioned that, in his experience, there is little interest among members to come to a meeting to work on committees. This is not what attracts members. This work can be done in committees and brought back to the membership for finalization. This will require members to volunteer for and work in the committees to do the work. In his opinion, it is programs that attract members to the meetings.
It was acknowledged that our botanical garden is in the midst of several problems and that these are being worked out. Among the issues are: where we can locate/relocate the garden (due to the nutsedge problem); the thought that since the garden is designed to represent Region 15 hybridized daylilies we should enhance the collection by soliciting specimens from hybridizers in our region to make the collection more current and complete; and the logistics of the move or “reestablishment” of the garden.
Thanks to Taunia and Neil for giving us member referrals. And a huge big thank you for allowing us to hold a winter dinner in their grand wedding chapel.
Meeting was adjourned at 4:20.

Executive Meeting January 2022
The four officers: Erin Carroll, Mark Davis, Ginny Frechette, and Fran Crumly met at the Anderson library 3:30 to discuss the year’s meetings and activities.
The winter dinner will be at Neil Richardson’s, gathering at 2:30 and eating at 3pm. The dinner is free to members for their work last year. It will be catered by someone that Erin knows and we have used before.
It was requested to send an email to members to mail in their dues or be prepared to pay dues at the dinner. Fran Crumly is our new treasurer.
Bill Manning, Floyd Cousins, and Bill Hemmingsen have agreed to be a committee to research and choose a flower collection that will be voted on at the Winter dinner. There was a discussion to stop publishing our booklet and put it on the members website. A few complete papers will be printed by Mark Davis for those who prefer the system in that format.
Our garden chairman will look into the possibility of moving our SCBG as it is overrun with nutsedge. Several possible locations were mentioned but that is up to Clemson to OK.
Mark Davis brought up the information that if you join the American Hemerocalis Society you will get free or reduced admission to a number of gardens, some of which we hope to visit this year on daylily trips.
The Hemalina was looking for a write up on Karen Ledbetter who passed this fall and we will do that.
The meeting dates and topics have been set as much as possible.

August 2021
The August 2021 meeting of the Upstate Daylily club was held on the 15th at the Anderson library. Erin opened the meeting at 2:45 and we had refreshments first thanks to the Bryants, Brenda, and the Martins so as to have time to get the flowers in order to sell. It was the ever- popular sale of our collection and donations. We had a small group of about 20 who had a fun time bidding on the flowers. Several people who said no more flowers still bid and won a few as there were beautiful flowers.
Donna Bobby announced that Clemson will be having their flower sale in person so we planned a work day at the SCBG on Thursday Sept 23th at 9 am to dig daylilies and prep them for the sale on the 24th and 25th. Please bring some garden tools to do the job.
. There was a lively discussion about the nutsedge in the garden. No consensus about how to clean it out, perhaps digging out to dirt and replacing it with new dirt or a chemical that might kill it although no one knew of one that was a guarantee. or moving the garden to another location within the botanical garden.
The library is closing again so the next 2 meetings will be held at Mt Airy church unless the library reopens.
The next meetings were reviewed as September: a speaker for technology and how to use it on the various computers, smart phones, etc. October plant exchange and pot luck dinner at Mt Airy church and Nov. possibly putting some daylilies on the roof top garden at a hospital as previously suggested by Mark Davis.

June/July 2021 Daylily Meeting
We had a wonderful time at 2 June gatherings. The month was premiered with a Saturday brunch on June 5th due to the graciousness of Bill and Karen Manning. It was held outside under the shade of some old trees. Karen outdid herself with the food and homemade blueberry or peach ice cream. The timing was almost perfect as we were able to enjoy their extensive gardens with a huge display of daylilies and other plantings. It is truly a southern home setting in the outskirts of town such a “Gone with the Wind” vibe. It was a wonderful time of fellowship and getting to know some new members.
On June 12th, we had the pleasure of going to Brian and Donna Martin’s Bunny Trails Garden which is an ADS Display Garden. Brian has done a beautiful job of rimming his yard with a ton of daylilies and it is a delight to stroll the yard and see how he has orchestrated the flowers. Members and neighbors came in throughout the morning and were able to nibble on some tasty snacks while sitting in chairs ”in the shade of the old apple tree.” (Just stealing some song lyrics. I don’t really think it was an apple tree.) He has the best neighbors as part of his garden ran off onto their property and they were fine with that.
As an extra bonus, some members went on to Walhalla to Tammy and Kelvin Bryant’s garden where in addition to his flowers and little greenhouse, he has built a fish pond off his deck. The fish were very entertaining, but also to be noticed, they have several birds in a cage on their deck as well. Tammy gives all the credit to Kelvin for the green thumb and making their yard a delight.

April 18, 2021 Daylily Meeting
The meeting was held at Mt Airy Baptist Church in Powdersville. There were 16 people in attendance. It will be our new location for the year or at least until the Anderson library opens up if that turns out to be the most convenient location. We are grateful to Brenda Coggins for securing this location as it suits our needs very nicely. Kelvin Bryant and Irma Kawski had choices too and thank them for their efforts.
The meeting opened at 2:20 by Erin Carroll and prayer by Mark Davis. Unfortunately our speaker was sick and could not make the meeting so we continued on with other actions. Mark then brought up the projector problem. Jill Burriss had researched the light bulb not working and spoke to the company who suggested it was an internal problem. After discussion, it was decided and voted on to not pursue this projector nor buy another one since there is so much new and better technology on the market. Mark volunteered to bring his TV when needed as it is very portable rather than buying one for the club at this time. We will try this option and will decide later if this is the best way to go. We will find a place to donate the slide screen and projector.
Ginny Frechette passed out a map of the area for members to mark where they live. This will aid us in making decisions about getting help for members if needed, transportation, where to meet for trips, hold meetings etc.
Ideas were suggested for eliminating slugs on Hostas’, like diatomaceous earth, beer saucers, egg shells, or gum tree balls.
Karen Manning gave the treasurer's report. All bills have been paid and the tax papers filed.
Our collection of flowers for this year was purchased from Eric Simpson and Donna Bobby will call him and get the expected shipping date. Hopefully they will be ready for our May 16 meeting at the Clemson Botanical Garden and can be distributed then. At that meeting come in garden clothes and tools. Refreshmens will be provided by Jill Burriss, John Cousins, Floyd Cousins, and Fran Crumley We will split flowers as needed and sell them to the club members for $5.00. Donna B. will get the list of flowers to Jill B. She will make a list so we will be able to see what is possibly available. Kelvin suggested we procure some newer daylilies as some are from the “90”s. Everyone agreed though the old flowers are still very pretty.
Mark reported on the Gibbs trip in March and said it was a wonderful experience. Everybody had a good time. The garden is beautiful and was really packed with people by the time they left. However, remember it is something like 200 acres so the only crowded thing was the parking lot. He said we should plan another trip since each month new things are blooming. They also sold daffodils there.
There are many other gardens in the area that we should see. Bill Manning said the U of Ga. has a botanical garden that is very nice. If you pay for entrance to one garden you can upgrade a bit and get entrance to a lot of other gardens although not all charge for admittance. Mark D. will clarify that for us if anyone is interested. The Roses Unlimited gardens in Laurens was suggested as well as our own David Hoecht near Commerce, Ga. The Pickens Azalea festival while not a garden was a nice town event April 11-12?
Donna B will send Jill B the list of the Bell collection that will be auctioned this year. She will then post so you can see what will be offered for sale. The pictures will also be on the TV at the sale.
In an effort to attract more new members Mark brought up the idea of a brochure to hand out and a “meet and greet” at Neil Richardson’s nursery for several Saturdays. The brochure will need to be created, but we can still go and talk until it is ready.
Jonathan Long told us of a committee he is on that helps MS people in need. His group will build ramps, look for or provide equipment, help with shopping etc. If anyone can help with this that would be appreciated.
It was mentioned that we need to bring our booklets to the meetings to make any changes that come up. Notices are sent out but often we have updates that we don’t want people to miss.
Jill Burriss offered free Koi to anybody that wants them.
Erin Carroll reviewed the year’s schedule. Aug. Sept and Oct will be at Mt Airy. The Saturday June 5th meeting at Mannings will be at 10 a.m. for social hour and eat at 11 ish. This will replace their bar-be-que in September so we can enjoy their beautiful flowers and hospitality.
Thanks to Karen Manning for the door prizes. She had garden gloves, a porch sign and several jars of jelly beans. Many thanks to our refreshment hosts: Brenda Coggins, Donna Bobby, Jonathan Long, Donna Martin, and Ginny Frechette for providing the delicious and plentiful snacks and drinks. Also thanks to the Bobbys and Brenda C. for bringing flowers provided the Martins.

Feb 2021 Meeting Minutes
The February 21, 2021 meeting of the Upstate Daylily Club was opened at 2:30 by Pres. Erin Carroll. She welcomed the members and commented on how long it has been since we have been able to meet.
Due to Covid we do not have a permanent location to meet, but Neil Richardson was gracious to let us gather at his wedding venue which is a beautiful building.
Karen Manning gave us a financial report and we are solvent. The big expense was paying for the Eric Simpson collection from Blue Ridge Gardens in North Carolina.
Ginny Frechette read the minutes from the January Executive meeting. She explained that each person could take a hand painted rock to place in their garden as the door prize this meeting.
Erin Carroll explained the year’s meetings planned as by the Executive Committee.
January- executive planning meeting
February 21- Anderson: to discuss all the information for the year and review the questionnaire and members opinions. Mark Davis did a great and thorough job of leading us through the paperwork and honing in on what the members are hoping to gain from the meetings. Interest is in exploring the technology of using our phones and other equipment. Also visiting open gardens including our own members. People are willing to work for the club and lighten the load for the leaders.
March 12 9 AM clean up at SCBG
March 20– members trip to Gibbs Botanical Garden in Georgia to view the daffodils and maybe some tulips. Researching the possibility of renting a bus if enough people want to go.
April 18- location: Easley Library @ 2:15 will be Mark’s son to teach the I phone and Android capabilities
May 16- Meet at Clemson Botanical Garden Bloom time at the Botanical garden and see our garden in bloom
June- 5 -(Saturday)10 a.m. the awesome Manning picnic and walk their beautiful garden.
June12- Open Garden at “Bunny Trails” of Brian and Donna Martin
July 10 (Saturday) road trip to Blue Ridge Daylily Gardens. You will be amazed it is wonderful and this is where our collection is coming from.
August 15- Club Auction 2:15 location TBA - Bell Collection
September 19- Speaker at Easley Library
October 17- Plant Swap and potluck (or dish to pass if you prefer terminology)
November Service project
December ? Christmas lights walking in Downton Seneca.
Donna Bobby gave us an update of the condition of our garden in SCBG. There are a number of broken labels and extra plants that we did not plant. As the garden blooms a committee will check the plat and try to identify the extra plants. Also, there are some dead daylilies that need to be replaced. Donna had the new booklets ready and passed them around. She also informed us of the passing of Kelvin Bryant’s sister and Kay Christian’s Aunt.
Mark Davis led a comprehensive overview of the questions and answers from the questionnaire that members were requested to comment on. He thanked the previous members for their support in getting the club established and the need for new members to keep the club viable. The takeaway is that the members want technology training and would like to visit other gardens as well as our own members’ gardens (We may try to arrange transportation). We also need some plans for reaching out to get new members.
Our next gathering will be in Clemson at the Botanical Gardens to get that ready for Spring. No decision was made on how to eliminate the nutsedge that has invaded the garden and no one knew of a chemical that would be effective.
Irma Kawski let us know that the possibility of meeting at her church is off the table. Ginny Frechette said we can meet in the Easley Library, free of charge in an unfinished room with no kitchen but it will have tables and chairs.
Delicious sandwiches, fruit, nuts, and cake refreshments were provided thanks to Bobbys, Hemmingsens and kay Christian.
Also, a big THANKS to the Richardsons for the use of their wedding venue.

August 16 Meeting Minutes
The August 16th, 2020 meeting of the Upstate daylily Club was held at Hornbuckle Club House. The meeting was opened by Erin at 2:25 with Mark Davis, VP giving a prayer. presiding. It is our ever- popular auction of Collection Plants that we have grown for a year or two and then sell to our members at below retail.
26 members were there and those who were there were delighted with all their bargains. Jill Burriss did a wonderful job taking over first time for Bill Hemmingsen who had previously set up the pictures and spoiled us with the organization of such a major task. Thanks to Bill for all his years of service. He set the bar high and Welcome aboard to Jill who was up to the task. There was a projector problem (which will be looked into, may just need a new bulb.) distorting the color of the flowers but fortunately due to modern technology we got on board and could see the pictures that Jill had posted on our site and email. People liked seeing them ahead of time to make decisions about what they wanted the purchase.
Karen Manning gave the treasurer’s report of expenses for the month and current balance which was approved and seconded.
Ginny Frechette read the July minutes which are posted on the Daylily site. They were approved and seconded.
The newly instituted door prize giveaway provided by Erin and Mark was held. Neil Richardson, Bill Frechette, and Floyd Cousins were the winners. Later in the meeting it was voted on and approved to spend $30 for prizes each month as it is a popular feature of the meeting. The officers will each take a turn at purchasing the gifts.
Mark went over several of the concerns that came out of the Zoom meeting in July the first being that it would be helpful if people downloaded the free Chrome app so communication from the club would be uniform. We are trying to create some committees to spread out the work load. We need feedback on several problems mainly needing a place to meet each month while Covid has shut down so many public places. Fran Crumley and Donna Bobby volunteered to look into that.
Nancy Hart is heading up the Sunshine Committee and Jill Burriss volunteered to help her. We would like to reach out to the members who weren’t able to be at the meeting and make sure they don’t need our help in some way.
Mary McCabe put a wonderful article in the Hemalina about our June meeting featuring our own Bill Manning. He lectured on Sexting Daylilies and the article was very complete about the process Toinette Thomas volunteered to help Mary with publicity and maybe even have more info for the Hemalina about our club. Erin Carroll also suggested some other exposures to get the word out.
The club needs help in finding and recruiting some speakers for next year. Now is the time before they are all taken. Please let Erin/Mark know if you have any ideas. We would like daylily subjects, hybridizers, dirt, fertilizer, weed control, etc. but topics of general interest would be good too.
If you would like to have some road trips as we have done in the past, let us know when and where. ( If you haven’t gone to the Greenwood topiary display it was great.)
Mark pointed out that we need a committee for nominations of new officers as the terms are for two years and some offices will be up for change.
Welcome to Clay and Katherine Williamson and daughter Karter Forest. They have been members for a few months Mia culpa for not recognizing them sooner. Glad you could join us.
The September Meeting was graciously volunteered to be hosted by the Mannings to have their ever- popular picnic at their home in Abbeville. The date will be decided later and announced by text, email and members site.
The October 18th meeting will be back at Hornbuckle for our potluck and garden plant exchange for other than daylilies. Many thanks to Jim Bazzone for arranging the club house (and doing some sweeping up etc. afterwards).
And on with the show!
Donna Bobby took over for the start of the auction. She told us that Tim Bell is having a Garden Extravaganza on September 12 from 10-3. There will be prizes, giveaways and raffles. He can only accommodate so many but at this time there are still a few places open (there is a fee of $50 per person but you will receive a $150 plant.). He sent Donna some brochures if anyone might like to attend. Note too that he has guarantees on his plants to grow.
She explained the rules of the auction that if you grew the plant you can buy it back at half price of the bid if you want. Also, if there is more than one plant of the same kind, how it will be sold so everybody pays the same price.
Elizabeth Carroll was our cute little runner for delivering to the winner and she did an awesome job. Thanks Elizabeth!
The bidding was steady and most people got to go home with a plant that they wanted. Some went home with more than they wanted, but the beauty of the flowers was too hard to resist. Thank you Donna, great job.
We broke for delicious refreshments thanks to Mark Davis, Priscilla Raeuber , and others. Members were then able to pay for their plants without waiting in line to check out.
Happy Planting all the new treasures.

July 2020 Meeting Minutes
The July meeting of the Upstate Daylily club was held on July 19th, 2020 by the avenue of Zoom due to most meeting places being closed down. Due to an error in sign in we got a late start with only 9 members were present. Apologies to those who tried and could not get on. V.P. Mark Davis opened with a short prayer and then administered the meeting.
Secretary’s minutes from June were not read, but had been posted on the members site and they were approved by Bill Manning and 2nd’ed by Nancy Hart.
The treasurer Karen Manning gave her financial report and there were no additions or subtractions from the June accounting. The report was approved, then seconded by Mark Davis.
A general discussion of topics took place with some new ideas about committees introduced that he and President Erin Carroll felt would help make the club stronger and better in outreach as we are gaining new members. Another downside is that Covid is wreaking havoc with our meetings and maintaining contact with each other. [G1]
There was a discussion about some of the club flowers struggling and what to do which included more water and possibly cutting them back.
The sign up for refreshments for next year will be at the October meeting.
It was brought up that we are struggling for places to meet inside due to the heat. Neil Richardson’s Venue and the clubhouse at Hornbuckle were mentioned, but with the stipulation that we do set up and cover cleaning and disinfecting costs, but we need other ideas. It is possible a restaurant would let us, or a state park.
The August 16th meeting, our auction of club flowers, was brought up. Donna Bobby graciously (with laughter) will be auctioneer but she wants 2 spotters for bidders and 2 flower passers. They will help her and Karen Manning keep track of who purchased what. The rules are listed in the back of the club handbook and they will be reviewed with possible update for future sales. Please check the members facebook club page for updates on that. Also please if you want to donate daylilies, please get the names to Jill Burriss as she is trying to put a picture list together. No picture and the bids are low or people are scrambling to look them up.
It was introduced that it would be helpful for some committees to research various needs and they were broken down into three with open for more areas of concern if someone suggests a topic.
First is an event group to help research where to have meetings until the library opens up and possibly find some places of interest for trips for the club to go on or what is happening in the area. The fall sale of SCBG was mentioned again as a reminder that it is cancelled as well as our trip to Blue Ridge gardens.
Second is a speaker committee, self- explanatory, we are always looking for people to bring in who have topics of interest to our members. Don’t be shy, they don’t always have to be flower topics but we have a wealth of contacts within the club, we just have to make the suggestion. One idea is to have Mark’s son come back and do a tech teaching so we can all be updated on how to use our phones effectively both in I phone mode and Android.
Third, most important socially, is to have an outreach (ie Sunshine) committee to attract and retain new members. To welcome them or show concern for ill members or one who needs help like a phone call, card or meal. Nancy Hart will do that.
Meeting adjourned at 3:30
As a reminder Refreshments for August 16 are scheduled to be provided by Jonathan Long, Mark Davis and 2 others.

June 2020 Meeting Minutes
The June Meeting of the Upstate Daylily Club was held on June 14, 2020 at the Oaks Venue of Neil and Tania Richardson. VP Mark Davis opened the meeting introducing the new format. Each officer will stand up front giving their reports and it was started with Ginny Frechette, secretary, reading the minutes of the May meeting which were then accepted and approved.
Karen Manning read the treasures report which was accepted and approved as well.
New members were introduced and welcomed to the club. Nancy and Victor Hart; Bill and Teresa Busby,
Jill Burriss requested pictures/names of any donated flowers for the August 16th auction. She will need email addresses in order to make it shareable.
Donna Bobby requested any garden pictures for the Hemalina be sent to Kathy Tinnius. She is the award winning editor for our region and does a great job with the magazine.
Kelvin Bryant spoke about our websites and reiterated that everyone should join as that is a good place to post our pictures and questions as well as get club info.
We had a visitor from Georgia who wanted to visit gardens in the area in order to meet her requirements as garden judge. Several people invited her to come and check out theirs gardens. The gardens need flowers 3 years old and newer in order to be judged. Brian Martin, Donna Bobby, Neil Richardson and Brenda Coggins volunteered.
Erin Carroll, President, took over the meeting and announced Heidi and Charles Douglas’s granddaughter had been killed in a car accident. Secretary will send a card.
October 4th and 5th will be the second chance sale at Clemson. The July open house at Blue Ridge Daylilies has been cancelled.
The SCBG garden is full of nutsedge which must be dug out. Members may have to go in small groups or alone to work on this. Park across the street by the fire station and walk across the road. Either carry out the weeds or place in an unobtrusive pile. Discussion about some chemical eradication. No decision. Also, some plants are very large and will need to be divided for sale at the fall SCBG sale.
The Oct 18th Club Plant Swap and dish to pass dinner will be held at Hornbuckle Club house. David Hoescht invited the club to come visit his garden soon as it is peak now.
Erin Carroll had some door prizes to hand out by drawing numbers. It was a new addition to the club fun and enjoyed by the members.
Meeting took a break for refreshments by the May group of McCabes, Marlene Cureton, and Toinette Thomas.
We were honored to have our own member, Bill Manning, be the speaker for the meeting. He used a white board to illustrate his talk on the sexting of daylilies. He explored and explained one way daylilies reproduce by sexual reproduction. He showed us the different parts of the flower and how they work together to produce a seed pod. The fertilization process takes between 4 to 6 hours for the pollen to move down the flower. He also explained how each seed is different so you could get 8 different flowers from one pod. They are usually different from the parent plant, while root and proliferations are exactly like the parent. Good information for anyone wanting to start hybridizing. Thanks to Bill for sharing his information.
Some beautiful hybridized flowers were on display by the Cousins and David Hoechst that people admired and encouraged to be registered.
Meeting was adjourned
May 2020 Meeting Minutes
The May 2020 meeting of the Upstate Daylily Society was held by Zoom arranged by Mark Davis. About 13 people attended. Apologies to whomever was not aware of the meeting due to errors in communication. We had several suggestions on how to better communicate with our members. It was bought up that not all members have asked to join our private site and that is where all the pertinent information is listed. You must be on facebook to get to the private site. If you do not receive an email, you can still be informed of what is happening there. We are going to be sending out a letter to have everyone check and update info, so we can do a more comprehensive job.
We are happy to announce we have three members: Carey Crumblis and Nancy and Victor Hart.
The treasurer’s report was given by Karen Manning and approved.
To confirm, our flower show has been cancelled, but the National Convention Auction flowers are for auction this week May18-22,2020. We will try to get that site out to members.
There is no word about the SCBG which has opened to visitors, but no word about the club being allowed to go and work on our garden.
Ginny Frechette will have Jane Reeves contact the library to reserve the August 16 club date and to reserve June 21 if the library will be open. Otherwise we will try Easley Library. The meeting will feature our own Bill Manning on “Sexing Daylilies” plus some extras. Refreshment people for May will now be responsible for the June meeting eats. That is McCabes, Marlene Cureton, and Brenda Coggins.
Donna and Frank Bobby have the plants from the Bell collection ready to pass out so please call Donna to make plans to pick them up if you agreed to grow one.
Bobbys and Frechettes will go to Savannah to see two gardens that were supposed to be on The National tour. We may able to get extra flowers and use them in some way for our club.
Eric Simpson has cancelled his July open house, but you can still go to the gardens.
Our August 16 meeting at Anderson Library is an auction for the Carpenter collection and “I can’t believe it’s a dip” daylilies as well as the plants we won at National two years ago because our table gift for the raffle came in second place for selling the most tickets. If you would like to donate some plants for that sale, you will need to let Jill Burriss know in advance so she can print pictures.
The Clemson fall sale is now scheduled for Sept 3 and 4 with second chance sale on Sept 18.
Our ever popular plant swap will be October 20. More info to follow.

April 2020 Officers Meeting
Thanks to Mark Davis, a zoom meeting was set up to discuss the future plans of the club. It was held on April 19 what would have been our regular meeting.
7 members were in “attendance”.
No order of agenda, many topics were discussed. Since we voted to up the honorarium to $100, it was suggested to send Aaron Davis another $50 for his presentation in Feb. Mark politely declined on behalf of his son, but it was thought that since he came from a distance (Columbia), it was appropriate.
The club collection flowers are here and ideas were thrown around about how to safely pass out the flowers and keep a social distance. Donna Bobby offered to have people come pick them up by appointment so there would not be too many at one time or just wait. There are 23 flowers to grow for active members of one year. Donna will send out the names of the flowers that we got.
She requested Kelvin send her the flower categories so we will have enough ribbons and certificates. Brenda Coggins has some leftover ribbons from previous shows.
Talk of when to reconvene was considered. We will ask Jane Reeves contact the library and see if they have a time line yet for reopening. Also make sure we are schedule for the Aug meeting.
Eric Simpson of Blue Ridge Daylilies planned to have his special open house bar-be-que and give away on July 11. Donna will contact him and see if that date is still holding. We may try to get a car pool going if people want to attend.
Kelvin announced that the mall is closed so he cannot reach anyone with information about when it might open. He will contact the judges to see if they are still willing to come. We will make a decision the first week of May about whether to proceed or not.
Kathy at SCBG will let Donna know when we can go to the garden and get it in shape. Eric from Clemson has said May will probably be canceled.
There is no date for the fall SCBG sale yet.
Bill Manning offered to give a presentation of sexual reproduction of lilies for a July meeting if we can meet.
It was suggested that we record the meetings for people who couldn’t come. Also possibly have a zoom meeting for people to call and listen in but there would be no video.
Kelvin Bryant mentioned that his sister’s house had bad damage from the tornado that hit Seneca.
Thanks to Mary McCabe for the great article in the Hemalina.
No refreshments were served unless everybody had some at their house!
Meeting Minutes March 2020
The March meeting of the Upstate Daylily Club was held at the Anderson Library on March 15, 2020. President Erin Carroll opened at 2:35 and Mark Davis offered a prayer. 20 members were in attendance. The minutes were read by secretary Ginny Frechette and approved by Mary McCabe. Due to 3 speakers having to cancel at the last minute, the business meeting convened. Karen Manning, treasurer, paid Tim Bell for the collection. Due to Corona Virus, if the plants cannot be passed out, Donna Bobby will pot them in her garden until we can get together.
The treasury balances will not be recorded in the minutes due to a spam problem within the society. A motion was made by Karen Manning and seconded by Mark Davis to adopt a financial statement as follows: The Upstate Daylily Society continues to maintain a balance in line with the Club budget as set and approved by the Board of Directors. All bills and receipts are processed promptly. The checkbook is balanced monthly and there have been no discrepancies.
Mark Davis explained the google chrome download and he will write out some directions to make it easier for the members including who can post on which site. The daylily site will be linked to the database. The minutes will be put on the private Upstate Daylily site but the events will be posted on the public site.
Garden clean-up for the Lily bed is scheduled at the Clemson Botanical Garden for Thursday March 19th.In case of rain it will be moved to the following Thursday March 25. Bring tools; park at the fire station on Perimeter Rd and walk across the street. The club members are grandfathered in from the new Clemson rules of everyone having to have security clearance.

Please her know by March 26 if you are coming so she can order the boxes. If anyone wants to donate flowers as well please send the names to Jill Burris so she can make pictures as the flowers sell much better when people can see what they will look like when blooming.
The sale is Friday April 3rdfrom 2-6 and Sat. April 4 from 9-1. It is requested that the volunteer workers come about 1 hour earlier on Friday and a half hour earlier on Sat. for set up. Also, the 2nd chance sale is April 18th.

A motion was made by Mark Davis for a $25.00 certificate for the winner of each classification to be redeemable at the fall auction. The amount was established in previous years and seconded by Donna Bobby. It was approved.
Brenda Coggins requested that anyone who has ribbons from previous shows, that they do not want to keep, return them for reuse.
A discussion was instituted about ways to make the sale better known to the public. It was suggested by Erin that we advertise more. Mary McCabe and Jill Burris will contact the radio, the Anderson Newspaper and other garden clubs.
Suggestions were solicited for ways to make the club more visible and also viable to the area. Some suggestions were to have a flower sale in another location beside Clemson; get professional speakers; increase the honorarium to $100 minimum; put information in home centers. Subjects of interest: learn how to hybridize; use videos; have our own members be speakers; learn how to properly divide and plant daylilies; and soil properties, amendments and fertilizers.
After a mid- meeting break for delicious refreshments, the meeting was later adjourned at 4:45.
Update: The flowers from the collection have arrived and Donna and Frank Bobby have potted them til we can distribute them. All meetings are cancelled for the time being as the library is closed; the summer regional has been cancelled; no word on the National Convention in Savannah. We will update you as we get any information.
